After two extremely successful seasons as UCLA's head basketball coach, Gene Bartow moved from California in 1977 to take on a new challenge: creating an athletic department for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During his next 18 years there, Bartow filled the roles as athletics director for UAB as well as head coach for the men's basketball team. In that time frame, Bartow took a relatively unknown team and brought them into the national spotlight, leading them to nine NCAA basketball tournament appearances and five NIT appearances. More than that though, he helped shape the very foundation of UAB athletics. Celebrate the life of one of college's greatest head coaches with this tee. It reads, simply, "Thank You, Gene," and gives the years of his life over a Blazers athletic logo and commemorative "GB" basketball.
