Nearly every year since 1915, the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators have faced off in a heated battle fueled by tradition and fierce competition. Named The Florida vs Georgia Football Classic, this college tradition pits two NCAA football powerhouses against each other in one of the only remaining college neutral territory sites - Jacksonville, Florida. The Gators and Bulldogs draw huge crowds to downtown Jacksonville for what had once been nicknamed The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. With the exception of just 2 years, since 1933, the Florida Classic has been played in Jacksonville Florida and in recent tradition, has been played on the last Saturday in October.The Florida Georgia game is a huge source of revenue for both the University of Georgia and the University of Florida, particularly because it is held on neutral territory as opposed to a home and away basis. Downtown Jacksonville businesses also see a burst in revenue the weekend of the Florida Georgia Football Classic, some businesses boasting their biggest sales of the year.Unlike many college sports rivalries, there is no trophy awarded to the winner of the Florida Georgia game. It was once disputed to award the winning team the goal posts from the game, as a way to keep fans from storming the field and destroying them. In 2009, however, the two schools announced the creation of a new trophy called the Okefenokee Oar. Carved from a 1,000 year old Cypress tree from the Okefenokee Swamp, the 10-foot-long Oar was donated anonymously to the University of Florida in 2009. Opposing sides of the trophy are carved with symbols and logos from each school. Since 2009, the Okefenokee Oar is presented to the winning university's student body president. No trophy is awarded during the Florida Georgia game, however.
